Summit Big S Pass Holder UPDATE - From Summit at Snoqualmie

Dear Big S Pass Holders,
First and foremost, I want to personally extend a huge thank you for hanging in there with us through this very challenging and frustrating weather pattern we've found ourselves in so far this winter. The amount of support and positive feedback you have given us has been immense.

I have been a Summit skier (and now snowboarder as well) for my entire life. No question, this winter has been right up there as one of the most challenging and disappointing. I lived through the 76-77 winter as a disappointed teenager with new skis not used until March. I lived through the 80-81 winter as a disappointed young ski instructor without skiers to teach. Finally and more recently, I patiently waited for the snows to come in the fall of 1989 and they never did. January of that year treated us well, however, and by late January we had an above average snowpack and great skiing the rest of the year! Fourteen feet of snow in two weeks! I dream every night of a "re-run" of that January, only let's call it February!

Looking forward this year, of course none of us know for sure what Mother Nature has in store. We are pleased that a number of the forecasters at this point are calling for real winter to start soon, with average or above average snowfall on the way. Looking back at the snowfall data from other years with poor starts, the trend has been strongly in favor of this happening.

Our staff at the Summit takes great pride in our ability to make the best out of difficult situations. Rest assured, we will do everything possible to get full operations back up and running as soon as we can. We are firm in our belief that Mother Nature will be kind in the coming months and bless us with a large amount of snow.

We do of course recognize at this point that the number of skiing days available to you has been less than expected. It is certainly our desire to keep you as a dedicated Summit skier or rider and keep our Big S Pass known for its incredible value. As the remainder of the season unfolds, we will continue to assess the quantity and quality of skiing available and let you know in the spring just what we can do for credits or discounts off of future pass purchases.

In the meantime, if you have the opportunity to travel south or north of the state, we highly recommend you take advantage of some of the offers we have been able to put together specially for Big S Pass holders. For example, your Big S Pass is honored seven days a week for the rest of the season at both Northstar-at-Tahoe, and Sierra-at-Tahoe. Special lodging deals are also available. We've heard from a number of folks who've already made the trip south and had a fantastic time in all that snow that missed us earlier in the month. If you prefer to travel north, check the Big S Club link on our website for details on special deals at Whistler and other nearby resorts.

Once again, we appreciate immensely the huge support, patience, and overall positive energy so many of you have shown in the past several weeks. We look forward to nothing more than seeing you again on the slopes soon.

Sincerely,

Dan Brewster
General Manager

Conditions

"With the Superbowl so close, we thought a football analogy would be appropriate. It's 3rd and nine, we're a little bruised, but punting is not an option. The playbook calls for Summit West to open today from 9AM-4PM.

Dodge Ridge, Little Thunder, and the Magic Carpet will operate. Adult lift ticket prices will be $30 and youth lift tickets will be $25. Half day begins at 1PM; adult tickets are $23 and youth are $18.

Since the forecast is still calling for a blitz play (i.e. more rain), operations are day-to-day. Check back tomorrow for updates on operations for Friday and this weekend. Keep the faith, and sacrifice a pineapple." - Summit- at-Snoqualmie.com

Snowboarding Fitness

Fat, flabby, and out of shape. Is this how you want to start your snow boarding season? If your answer is yes, then bust out a couple of long necks and pump some 12 oz. curls. Now, for everyone else out there who actually wants to make it through their first powder day, listen up. These exercises will keep you in top shape so you can plow through the pow like Rick James on a whirlwind back ally bar crawl.

First and foremost, you need to keep your core in shape. There are many ways to do this including mountain biking, jogging, swimming, and lifting weights. Since most people don’t have access to an Olympic size swimming pool, and jogging can be hard on your knees, your best bet is to bike and lift your way to a stronger core.

Lifts:

Crunches:

In the starting position, your back should be flat against the floor, your head up, eyes on the ceiling, hands folded behind your head, your knees relaxed and bent, feet on the floor. Rise to the point where you feel your stomach muscles tightening, hold then release, returning your back to the floor.

Calf Raise:

Stand on calf block or two by four. Hold dumbbells at side. Raise heels by extending ankles as high as possible. Lower heels by bending ankles until calves are stretched. Repeat.

Squats:

Place the bar across the traps and shoulders. Slowly lower yourself as if you were about to sit down in a chair. The butt goes out and down, your lower back, hips and knees bend all in concert. Begin to sit down, keeping your eyes straight ahead, bar steady and over your knees, with feet flat, until your thighs are near ground parallel. Sit up, pushing off with your heels being careful not to tip forward and allow the back and bar ascent to lag behind the leg thrust. Upright, take a deep breath, hold it going down keeping the torso muscles tight, reach parallel, push up and exhale as you ascend.

Leg Press:

Sit down with your but and back flat against the seat. Push the weight up and release the safety bars. The starting position is when your legs are at about a 180-degree angle. Next, you will proceed to lower the weight down so that your legs will finish at a 90-degree angle. Do not lower the weight lower than this because your lower back may start to come off of the seat and this will cause lower back discomfort. Also, hold on to the handles on the side of the seat so you do not start to slide off of the seat.

Reverse Side Crunch:

Lay flat on your back with arms, clasp both hands behind your head. Raise side and elbow up as one with other elbow on floor. Alternate sides and repeat.

Lat Pull Down:

Grasp bar slightly wider then your shoulders. Pull down cable bar to upper chest. Return until arms and shoulders are fully extended. Repeat.

Bring on the snow!

URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SEATTLE A450 AM PST MON JAN 10 2005

...WINTER STORM WATCH FOR TUESDAY NIGHT...A STRONG COLD FRONT WILL SWEEP SOUTHEAST ACROSS WESTERN WASHINGTON ON TUESDAY EVENING. BEHIND THE COLD FRONT...SNOW LEVELS WILL QUICKLY FALL TO NEAR SEA LEVEL...AND STRONG WINDS HEADING INTO THE CASCADES SHOULD LEAD TO HEAVY SNOW. FURTHER ADDING TO THE SITUATION WILL BE THE PUGET SOUND CONVERGENCE ZONE...WHICH COULD FURTHER ENHANCE SNOWFALL AS IT HEADS INTO THE MOUNTAINS.

THIS FRONT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BRING ABOUT A FOOT OF SNOW TO THE CASCADES. A FAVORABLE WIND DIRECTION FROM THE NORTHWEST MEANS THE PASSES WILL LIKELY RECEIVE SOME OF THE HEAVIEST SNOW...SO TRAVELERS HEADING ACROSS THE CASCADES MAY WANT TO PLAN THEIR TRIPS TO AVOID CROSSING THE PASSES ON TUESDAY NIGHT. WINDY CONDITIONS WILL ALSO CAUSE BLOWING AND DRIFTING OF SNOW.

THIS IS STILL A DEVELOPING WEATHER SITUATION WITH INHERENT UNCERTAINTIES. PLEASE CHECK BACK WITH YOUR FAVORITE MEDIA OUTLET OR NOAA WEATHER RADIO FOR LATER UPDATES AS THE TIME OF THIS EVENT APPROACHES.

Just in from the pass

Snoqualmie Pass is in sad shape right now. There is an 18" base... it needs about another 12" to cover up all the rocks, roots, and tree tops. There are still some serious boulders sticking through the snow. Keep your new Christmas board in your garage and bust out your rock board. Today brought new meaning to taking a tree run. I managed to get into some flats, and the only way down was through some trees... tree tops that is.

Today must have been national ski school day. There were at least twice as many kids under 15 years old then adults.. notice the picture. Needless to say the lift lines were a disaster and the high speed quads were operating in slow motion.

You'll need some tunes for the slopes

lagwagon
Upbeat skate punk is one way that people might describe this album. The one thing that sets it aside from all the others is the double pedaled bass drum and solid harmonic semi ska bass lines. This album has the bottom end that most punk bands lack. You'll find new meaning in the witty lyrics every time you listen. My only complaint is the brevity of the record. With only 32 minutes, you’ll feel slightly cheated. In this case, Fat Wreck Chords didn’t try to add any dissident filler. The whole album is solid and will outlast your ipod. This is a definite must for a powder day.

pennywise If Lagwagon is for a powder day, Pennywise is the choice for those double diamonds. Nothing else will amp you up for the steeps. Jim Lindberg is a political prophet – he delivers his anti status quo message with blazing speed. You’ll make it down Upper International faster then Speedy’s illegitimate half brother, Crank Gonzalez, can say eight ball!
